Indonesian musical phenomenon Ubiet (Nyak Ina Raseuki) joins Kroncong Tenggara for an exceptional night of world music.
Ubiet is one of the very few artists in Indonesia who is also a scholar of music. She is well-known for her vocal work which seems to have no boundaries between various styles, techniques, and expressions. For Ubiet, singing is not just what is produced by a melodious voice, but it also involves creating dissonant and even unharmonious sounds.
Recently, Ubiet began working with well-known world musicians, Dian HP and Riza Arshad, to explore their national musical treasure, kroncong. Kroncong is one of the oldest genres of popular music which developed in the Indonesian archipelago.
For this concert, Ubiet will be joined by the Indonesian ensemble, Kroncong Tenggara, to mix the elements of kroncong such as the cak-cuk rhythm of the ukulele, the skipped-beat cello and the gong of the bass with contemporary sounds. Together they hope to bring forth the power of kroncong, but at the same time create a new world music.
This tour is supported by the Commonwealth through the Australia-Indonesia Institute of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Planet is the Brisbane Powerhouse dedicated world music and dance program. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
