PNGAA presents three Literary Events with the acclaimed writer and speaker Patrick Lindsay, author of The spirit of Kokoda, Fromelles, The spirit of Gallipoli, and many more.
From the beaches of Gallipoli to the jungles of Kokoda, the struggle for Australia’s freedom during the two World Wars is filled with inspirational stories of survival, heroism and mateship. Patrick Lindsay’s painstaking research on wartime events has been recorded in 15 compelling books. His latest book, The Coast Watchers, explores the heroic exploits of the tiny band of men “formerly government officials, planters, traders, miners, missionaries or locals and later soldiers and sailors” left behind during the Japanese occupation of the Pacific Islands.
Living on the edge, always on the alert for Japanese patrols or changes in villager attitudes, the Coastwatchers were extraordinary heroes of the Pacific War who risked their lives when the Japanese had total control of the region and discovery meant certain death. From their jungle hideouts they gave early warnings of Japanese air strikes, reported on the movement of ships and troops and personally saved hundreds of lost soldiers, shipwrecked sailors and downed airmen (including the future President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy).
Patrick Lindsay draws on 30 years’ experience as a journalist and television reporter. He is a gifted public speaker with a gentle wit. Audiences are always inspired by his passion for the Australian spirit.
Patrick will be speaking about The Coast Watchers at three literary events.
