Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO) is the State’s major orchestral training and performance organisation for young musicians aged 9 to 23. Since its formation by John Curro AM MBE in 1966, QYO has provided orchestral experiences for over 6,000 young musicians. There are currently 500 musicians in eight ensembles based at the Old Museum Building: three symphony orchestras, two wind orchestras, a junior string ensemble, a chamber orchestra and a big band. QYO ensembles give around 70 concerts each year with approximately 30% of these in regional centres. Concerts are attended by approximately 15,000 people annually.
The 100-member Queensland Youth Symphony conducted by John Curro AM MBE is QYO’s leading orchestra and has a reputation as one of the world’s finest youth orchestras.
