Global sensory phenomenon
Using cutting-edge technology, dancers’ movements trigger light and sound patterns, creating kaleidoscopic patterns and optical illusions. Director and choreographer Gideon Obarzanek says given the scale and precision of the production there is nothing else quite like it in the world.
“The performance is different every time because the lights and lasers change with how the dancers move — this gives them enormous freedom,” he says.
The underlying story behind Mortal Engine symbolises conflicts between the self and shadowy other. The dancers represent the real world and the projections represent the ‘other’. Mortal Engine explores themes such as attraction and repulsion, dark and light, the imaginary and the tangible as well as mortality, sexuality and desire.
Audiences can expect a unique experience that hits them both intellectually and literally where they feel like they’re being pulled into the performance.
