Art of seduction
Maria de Buenos Aires is a visually gorgeous production that transports audiences to the back streets of Argentina to dance the tango, hear the sultry sounds of the bandoneòn and take a long lingering look at the dark side of life. Astor Piazzolla’s ‘tango operita’ was first performed in Buenos Aires in 1968. Sung in Spanish, it is often hailed as a surrealist masterpiece.
In a co-production between Leigh Warren & Dancers and the State Opera of South Australia, the Brisbane Festival season will be the first time the highly successful show has travelled out of its southern home state. Director and choreographer Leigh Warren has collaborated with set designer Nigel Levings and costume designer Kathryn Sproul to create the steamy Argentinean atmosphere.
To complete the illusion, one of the world’s foremost bandoneòn virtuosi, Argentinean Santiago Polimeni will join the cast. The group will be musically directed from the piano by Timothy Sexton. The trio of leading voices, Cherie Boogaart who plays Maria, Mark Oates who sings the role of the Cantor and Alirio Zavarce, the narrator, will leave audiences stunned with their incredible talent.
