Beijing meets Brisbane in stunning dance performance
Celebrated Chinese dance company BeijingDance/LDTX and Brisbane’s Expressions Dance Company (EDC) will present the Australian premiere of their collaborative performance First Ritual following its world premiere in Beijing.
BeijingDance/LDTX was China’s first non-governmental professional dance company and operates under the artistic direction of Willy Tsao, the foremost figure in Chinese contemporary dance.
EDC artistic director, Natalie Weir, has freelanced as the choreographer-in-residence for the Australian Ballet and created works for the American Ballet Theatre, Hong Kong Ballet and Singapore Dance Theatre.
Their collaborative contemporary dance, which explores the common rituals shared by Chinese and Australian cultures, has been described as “beautiful, poetic, stunning and profound.”
First Ritual started life as a Brisbane Festival 2010 Work in Progress by EDC. After its initial creation, it travelled to Beijing for the collaboration with BeijingDance/LDTX and became a feature performance for the Year of Australian Culture in China. It now returns home for Brisbane Festival 2011.
