Schubert’s mantra meets heartbreaking journey.
Die Winterreise (The Winter Journey) is a haunting yet beautiful performance that unites music, theatre, dance and design. It stars legendary cabaret star Paul Capsis, dancer James O’Hara, actor George Shevstov and pianist Alister Spencer – a wonderful cast who take the audience on a sometimes wry, sometimes heartbreaking journey.
Haunted by his earlier selves, an aging man drifts through a darkening landscape. Ahead is disappointment and behind, the wind erases any trace of footprints.
In 1827 Schubert composed a genre defining song cycle of a lovelorn wanderer; in 2011 director Matthew Lutton explores its eternal themes of loneliness and acceptance, journeying from sweltering Australian suburbia to Schubert’s frosted snowscapes.
Die Winterreise started life as a Work in Progress at Brisbane Festival 2010. This year we see it as a complete and stunning new work
Suitable for ages 15+.
