Bangarra – Terrain

Bangarra Dance Theatre presents Terrain, a new work of contemporary dance and theatre fused with storytelling by acclaimed choreographer Frances Rings.

Inspired by the landscape of one of our greatest natural wonders this work explores the metamorphosis and timeless beauty that is Lake Eyre. Tracing through the erosions of time we face the challenges of man and environment as they struggle for survival amongst the delicate ecology in search of the rare phenomenon that is Australia’s inland sea. Beyond the ancient vastness we travel through drought and deluge to witness this ephemeral transformation of place.

Described by choreographer Frances Rings as a “Hymn to Country”, this powerfully evocative new work transports us to the scorching arid desert plains where nature delivers in abundance and promises all but guarantees nothing.

Queensland Ballet – Don Quixote

When do dreams become real? Choreographer François Klaus offers a different take on the legendary story by Cervantes in this inventive production.

The ballet, Don Quixote, is being filmed, and the dancer performing the title role feels such an affinity for his character that he plunges himself into reading the original tale. In his dreams, he becomes the famous knight and is transported into the wonderful world of the Don’s illusions, where he performs chivalrous deeds, seeks glory in battle, and gives his heart to the beautiful Dulcinea. But the Don’s grand exploits are all in his head, and he is blissfully unaware of how much amusement this creates.

Back on the film set, there is a sparkling performance of highlights from the traditional ballet. With stirring music and spirited dance, this Don Quixote is a gentle reminder of the great power of imagination.

Songs For Nobodies

Songs For Nobodies is set to play a strictly limited return season in Brisbane at QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre from May 16.

Joanna Murray-Smith’s critically acclaimed one-woman show, starring Bernadette Robinson will return to Brisbane for a strictly limited season from May 16 – May 27.

Currently delighting Sydney audiences in an encore season, Songs For Nobodies had its World Premiere Season in Melbourne in 2010, where it has just finished a sold out encore season, receiving extraordinary reviews. Songs For Nobodies has had similar success in both Sydney and in Brisbane where it played at The Brisbane Powerhouse in 2011.

With direction by Simon Phillips, Robinson plays five ordinary women and five iconic singers, Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Maria Callas. Each ‘nobody’ recounts an intimate tale of how her life was transformed by an encounter with one of the icons.

Robinson seamlessly transforms, with phenomenal control of tone and accent, to bring to life each ‘nobody ‘and each legendary singer. Her voice shifts from the smoky blues of Billie Holiday to the thrilling soprano of Maria Callas, via Garland, Cline and Piaf, with consummate ease.

The Exploited (UK)

The Exploited are not ‘punkers’ or any of the other cutesy, watered down, TV friendly names you might want to call them. The Exploited are punk rock.

Formed in 1979, the quartet created a simple, no-frills sound characterized by speed and aggression. Led by vocalist Wattie Buchan, The Exploited is one of the UKs most politically outspoken thrash bands, who has built a strong and loyal following both at home and abroad for its anti-authoritarian stance and criticism of the government, particularly in the Reagan/Thatcher era.

In over two decades The Exploited have been tear gassed by German cops, banned from Holland, arrested in Spain, declared that the Falklands are British forever whilst on stage in Argentina and have caused more carnage than a multi-car pile up on the M1.
Throughout that time they have remained steadfastly true to their roots, never selling out, never splitting up (despite numerous line-up changes) and never bowing down. They’ve been accused of being dumb (yes, sometimes, but wilfully so) and causing trouble (guilty again, but smashing stuff is fun and punks are supposed to be obnoxious).
